I just went through the lessons at my own pace, which depends a lot on how much time you want to dedicate to it a day, but at least for me was definitely more than one a day.įor revision, I made Anki flashcards (mostly either cloze deletion or English > Spanish full sentence translations) for sentences I found particularly useful, like if it demonstrated a certain element of grammar I wanted to get the hang of or an irregular verb conjugation.Learning Danish has never been easier than with our new method, book and audio available on CD and streaming platforms free of charge. I highly recommend it (at least for Spanish, other courses might vary).ĮDIT: I should add, while I found the Assimil book itself a great resource, I don't necessary agree with their instructions of usage, for example, only doing one lesson a day, and the precise order of listening first, then reading, then reading again, or whatever it was again.

The footnotes and revision chapters are very useful, too. The best lessons are the ones that are dialogue-heavy and rely on that context to show you the different elements of the language's grammar in action along with the most common and immediately useful vocabulary. However, it's easy to just not pay much attention to these lessons. For example, there was one that was a poem, and another which used overly sophisticated vocabulary and writing style to discuss Spanish cuisine. My only complaint is that towards the end of the book some of the lessons (not all) started to become quite strange and less useful for a beginner or even intermediate learner. To each their own.įor Spanish, I can say I found it an excellent resource to bring me up to a level where I could move onto reading authentic novels with the help of an online dictionary. Personally I want to know the full explanation now so I use a grammar reference book. A big part of the Assimil method is giving bits of grammar instead of full explanations. For each lesson I will do some of my own sentences and input vocab into Anki.ĮDIT: Oh yeah. During he work week I might do one every two or three days. On a free day I will usually do two lessons. Just yesterday I started a lesson on the Finnish one that was about berry and mushroom picking. There are lessons that are worse than others. For languages farther removed (like Finnish), it can be overwhelming and a supplemental course along with Assimil might be best. For languages close to French or English I found the Assimil books very good because you can just jump in.

I have used/am using Assimil for two languages (French and Finnish). (You can download the first seven Danish lessons for free onto your phone or tablet.
